Vivid, Enduring.

An early Victorian stylized Maltese cross is set with a vibrant harlequin arrangement of gemstones—a bold yet elegant timeless jewel. The Maltese cross is an enduring motif, gaining widespread popularity in the late Georgian and Victorian periods—yet examples with such a vivid gemstone composition remain relatively rare.

A mix of natural sapphires adorn the terminals, each topped with three tiny pearls. We are particularly drawn to two standout stones: a cushiony, lively cornflower blue sapphire of approximately one carat, and a richly saturated pink sapphire of over one carat, nuanced with soft peachy undertones. Alongside a yellow and a deeper blue sapphire, they encircle a glowing, fiery red garnet at the heart of the composition. Antique rose-cut and old mine-cut diamonds are set along the arms of the cross, adding a soft, glinting shimmer.

As was typical for jewels of this period, the colored gemstones are set open-back in gold collets, while the diamonds are set closed-back in silver over gold.

This jewel does double duty as both pendant and brooch, with a fold-down bail. The original hinged C-clasp has been fixed in place, and the pin—likely once removable—is now set. Equally striking suspended from a period chain or pinned to the lapel of a blazer.

Unmarked.

14–15k gold, silver, sapphire, garnet, diamond, pearl.

Dimensions and weight:

● 39 mm long (not including bail) / 47 mm long (including bail)

● 38.5 mm wide

● 10.5 mm deep

● 16.3 grams

● approximately 5.7 carats total weight sapphires; 1.2 carats total weight diamonds; 2 carats garnet

Period: Early Victorian, circa 1840s

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. Discreet historical solder reinforcement is present at the interior arm junctions, on the reverse, and at the pin hinge, and is not visible when worn. A small, round opening at each interior junction point appears inherent to the construction. Subtle variation in the brightness and tone of the antique diamonds is typical.
