Antique French Gold Mesh Purse Pendant with Ruby and Diamond Star, Pearl Accents

Antique French Gold Mesh Purse Pendant with Ruby and Diamond Star, Pearl Accents
Celestial, Articulated. A Rare Jewel-Object.
We are always drawn to jewelry that blurs the line between adornment and object—and this French miniature gold mesh purse, dating to the cusp of the 19th and 20th centuries, is a striking example.
Its body is formed from a finely wrought gold mesh, composed of countless interlinked rings that create a supple, fabric-like structure with exceptional drape and presence in the hand. The gold itself is rich and warm, with a buttery tone that speaks to its age and quality.
At its center, a ruby and antique rose-cut diamond five-point star introduces a celestial note of guidance and constancy. Above, the scalloped and engraved frame is set with alternating rubies and diamonds, and finished with a pearl-set kiss-lock—an elegant mechanism of the period, with a touch of the whimsical. A fringe of pearls below echoes this detail, adding movement and softness.
The pendant opens to reveal an interior compartment, placing the piece firmly at the intersection of jewel and object—a miniature purse, worn close.
On the reverse, a blank cartouche awaits personalization, should you wish to make it your own.
Examples of this type—combining fine gold mesh, symbolism, gem-set detail, and artistry —are increasingly uncommon. A discreet loop on the reverse allows for suspension from a chain, dog clip, or spring ring. Particularly well suited to a long French sautoir.
Chain shown is not included.
Marked with French horse’s and Mercury’s heads, along with a maker’s mark.
18k gold, ruby, diamond, pearl.
Dimensions and weight:
● 70.8 mm long (including fringe)
● 50 mm wide
● 4.7 mm deep
● 30.3 grams
Period: Late Victorian/Edwardian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. One tiny antique rose-cut diamond is missing from the tip of a lower point of the star, visible only upon close inspection. Rather than introduce a modern replacement, we have chosen to leave this as found, preserving the integrity of the jewel. Our jeweler has discreetly reinforced the pearls at the kiss-lock for stability.
