Symbolic, Sculptural.

We have a special love for watch keys made and worn as jewelry, and are so pleased to offer a beautiful and rarely found example: a French gold watch key, circa 1820–30, designed as a double cornucopia. Each horn is richly chased and spills forth with grapes and other fruit—symbols of abundance, prosperity, and fecundity—centering a reversible stone. Tactile and sculptural, it is as pleasing in the hand as it is to the eye.

Set with a luminous green paste cabochon on one side and a soft translucent faceted chalcedony on the other, it may be worn with either side facing out. The locking key mechanism remains intact: pull up on the pin directly under the bail to unlock the key, allowing it to pivot open with the barrel facing down. Pivot the barrel back up to lock it in place when not in use. It is a deeply satisfying detail, speaking to its original function of winding a pocket watch, and today allowing for multiple ways of wearing.

Rare, sculptural, symbolic, and still functional, this is a remarkable piece of jewelry that bridges past and present. Substantial in scale yet effortless to wear, it is marvelous on a longer French sautoir.

From my personal collection, acquired some years ago.

Marked with French owl import marks in at least two locations; we believe the piece itself to be French, with the owl marks added later, based on its construction, design, and overall character.

18k gold, chalcedony, paste, steel (functional key componentsl)
