Beloved, Devoted.

We have always admired the regional type of jewelry known as Flemish hearts. Traditionally, in Flemish-speaking Belgium and in particular Antwerp, these hearts symbolized a devotion to the Virgin Mary. From a secular, more universal perspective, this heart represents love.

The Flemish heart is usually cleftless, made in silver, with a diamond at the center, surmounted by either a crown or a trophy of love. Our heart is topped by the trophy: two quivers, a bow, and a small, burning flame — attributes of Cupid, the god of Love.

The heart is actually a heart suspended within a heart, with a rose cut diamond at the center; the hearts and the trophy are all articulated segments, so there is wonderful movement.

Wear this on the lapel as a brooch or thread a ribbon or chain through the hidden back loop to wear as a pendant. We happen to love the contrast of rich gold against the antique silver patina of the heart. What do you think?

Chains shown are not included.

Unmarked.

Silver, diamond.

Dimensions and weight:

● 60 mm long

● 42..7 mm wide

● 7 mm deep (at deepest point - the center diamond)

● Center rose cut diamond measures approximately 5 mm long x 4.5 mm wide

Period: 19th Century (these were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries)

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate and age-commensurate wear may be present. The top might have been gilded (we see traces of color). The loop and brooch fittings are later replacements/additions (with an antique safety latch on the brooch).
