We have a special fondness for functional jewels, especially receptacles for the personal and sentimental. What can be more intimate than a favorite perfume to be worn in this vinaigrette?
We adore every aspect of this jewel — the sentimental forget-me-nots, the gem-set crown, the stylized shield shape, the richly engraved yellow gold. The ornamentation is completely in the round, with the back as beautiful as the front. Best of all, open the hinged cover to find an ornate grill underneath — which also lifts open to reveal a compartment within. Tuck a bit of sponge or cotton within, sprayed with your favorite perfume. Divine!
This vinaigrette is reminiscent of examples from the Regency period, but we believe this dates a little later to the mid-19th century. Antique vinaigrettes of such craftsmanship and in such wonderful condition are a rare find.
