Antique Neoclassical Locket with En Grisaille Portrait of Cupid and Venus, Circa 1810

Coup de foudre.

Some jewels capture my heart instantly — and this darling locket is one of them. I adore Cupid in jewels, and here he is, painted with a masterful hand en grisaille, alongside his mother Venus. It is such a tender and sensitive depiction of the bond between mother and child — of love, guidance, protection, playfulness, and joy. A meaningful jewel, particularly for any mother.

Then there is the locket itself — beautifully crafted and rather unusual in configuration: a diamond-shaped case, encircled by a glowing halo of split pearls. The gold is rich and velvety, and the locket is weighty for its size. Behind the portrait lies a lozenge of white metal, an intriguing construction detail which tests in the platinum range by non-invasive methods and could represent an early use of the material. Whatever its exact nature, it adds to the locket’s uniqueness. The interior retains its original locket rim, currently holding a piece of red ribbon, though ready to guard your own keepsake.

This jewel would make a superb addition to any collection of sentimental, Georgian, French, or portrait jewels. But for the dedicated locket lover? It’s an absolute dream!

Marked with French owl (later marked for resale; in our opinion this locket is French in origin, circa 1810). The locket will come with a later, vintage, curb link chain, marked with the eagle’s head (shown in photos suspending the locket). Found together, they will be offered together. Note that the other chains shown are not included.

18k gold (or higher, on locket), pearl.

Dimensions and weight:

● Locket: 48 mm long (including bail) x 23.6 mm wide x 5 mm deep

●  Chain: 17.25 inches long x 1.4 mm wide x .7mm deep

● 14.6 grams total (locket and chain)/11.4 grams (locket)/3.2 grams (chain)

Period: Georgian (locket); Vintage (chain)

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present.
