Antique French Victorian XL Silver "He Loves Me" Spinning Top Pendant

Antique French Victorian XL Silver "He Loves Me" Spinning Top Pendant
He Loves Me…
What a delight to find one of these coveted sentimental antique spinning top pendants — and even more so to find an authentic French example, as this one is. These romantic charms were inspired by the traditional French game Effeuiller la Marguerite — to “pluck the daisy,” also known as “he loves me, he loves me not.”
Each of the six sides reveals a different sentiment:
Il m’aime (he loves me),
un peu (a little),
beaucoup (a lot),
passionnément (passionately),
pas du tout (not at all),
and finally, a sweet enameled daisy in white and yellow, with one petal plucked.
This example is an especially rare and desirable discovery — the largest we’ve seen and graced with the soft, velvety texture only more than a century of touch can impart. It’s marvelous on a long chain, a watch chain, a bracelet — or anything in between.
This one also has a unique configuration: it’s attached to a short length of chain terminating in a small ball. To create a loop, simply double the chain and secure it through the cleverly designed bail. Was it once part of a whimsical chatelaine? Possibly. Today, it invites creative styling. At buyer’s option, we can adapt the chain to your specifications — though we’d love to see it preserved it in its original glory.
Marked with French crab at the spinner and chain, and a maker’s mark.
Silver.
Dimensions and weight:
● 45.5 mm/1.8 inches long (not including chain)
● 15.4 mm wide
● 17.1 mm deep
● 15.7 grams
Period: Victorian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present.
*For deliveries outside of the continental U.S., please contact us for shipping information.
