Antique French Perpignan Garnet and Gold Cluster Ring

Antique French Perpignan Garnet and Gold Cluster Ring
Center of Attention.
A large oval garnet is the luminous star of this striking cluster ring, hailing from Perpignan in French Catalonia. Perpignan garnets are known for their distinctive rose cuts and settings over tinted foil — techniques that give them their signature inner glow. We found this piece in Perpignan itself, perhaps not far from the very workshop where it was made over a century ago.
Most antique Perpignan cluster rings we’ve seen are marquise-shaped, making this one with its queenly oval center an especially delightful find. The richly colored central garnet glows with fire undiminished by time, its presence emphasized by a halo of smaller garnets adding dimension and brilliance. Examine the videos for a view of the ring under sunshine and on the hand.
Marked with French horse’s head (in use 1838 to 1919) and an unidentified maker’s mark.
18k gold, garnet.
Dimensions and weight:
● 17.5 mm long x 12.5 mm wide x 6.5 mm deep (on the garnet cluster)
● 5.2 grams
● Ring size US 8
Period: Victorian or Edwardian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. Two of the small halo stones have been stabilized in their bezels with epoxy or similar material. There is a small indentation on the back of the cupped setting behind the central stone — common and normal wear in antique Perpignan jewels. The shank may be a period replacement (it bears the French horse’s head mark, in use until 1919). The center garnet is joined to its halo with sturdy gold wire, as is typical construction for Perpignan cluster rings. A slight amount of movement in the setting is normal and not a defect.
