Antique French Edwardian Gold and Platinum Mesh Purse Pendant

This French purse pendant, dating to the early 20th century, is an unusual beauty. We have had a number of gold mesh purse pendants pass through our collection over the years, but this is the first we’ve had in gold and platinum.
We absolutely adore the mixed-metal look and the clean, geometric chevrons formed by thousands of tiny hand-wrought loops linked to create a supple mesh that drapes like fabric. The use of platinum for contrast against the gold extends to the smallest details, including the kiss lock, two of the dangling beads, the bail, and even the rivet heads at the joints of the purse frame. Marked with the French eagle’s head in multiple locations. This purse displays an early use of platinum in French jewelry, predating the introduction of the French dog’s head hallmark for platinum in 1912.
