Safe Journeys, Love.

We adore the scallop shell in antique jewelry — a motif that reaches back to antiquity and resonated deeply with the sentimental Victorians. The shell symbolized protection and safe passage and — looking back to the goddess Venus — themes of love and fertility.

Here, a fetching late-Victorian diamond shell necklace offers a presence that’s neither too bold nor too shy. The form is curvy and sculptural, crafted in rich yellow gold and set with rose-cut diamonds between the shell’s ribs, plus a central, dangling chunky old mine cut diamond for gentle, candlelit sparkle.

This necklace began life as a brooch/pin and was thoughtfully converted at some point with the addition of a fine adjustable gold chain. The work preserves the jewel’s antique character and charm, bringing it effortlessly into a modern stack — or letting it shine solo. We especially appreciate the adjustable lengths on the chain, and love this nestled into the hollow at the throat.

Other pendant and chain shown are not included.

Shell unmarked. Chain marked “750.”

18k gold, diamond.

Dimensions and weight:

● 18.8 mm long x 15.7 mm wide x 7 mm deep (shell)

● 18.75 inches long ; with an additional loop for closure at 16.75 inches (chain)

● 3.9 grams
