And this French purse pendant, dating to the early 20th century, is a beauty. Its body is formed from fine, silky gold mesh — countless tiny, hand-wrought loops interlinked to create a supple chain mail that moves like fabric. The “kiss lock” frame is engraved and delicately pierced with stylized motifs: just the right touch of ornamentation, not fussy. The gold itself is wonderful a rich, warm, buttery hue.
We’ve handled a number of chain-mail purse pendants over the years, but the elegant restraint of this one — unadorned by gemstones — keeps the focus on the craftsmanship and fluidity of the gold mesh. Simply divine.
