(SOLD) Antique Alling & Co. Edwardian Gold and Enamel Locket

Regal, Statement.

Once upon a time, the finest American jewelry was crafted in Newark, New Jersey — with Alling & Co. among its esteemed firms. Alling & Co. created for illustrious jewelers such as J.E. Caldwell, C.D. Peacock, and Tiffany & Co.

This shield-shaped locket is a beautifully preserved example of early 20th-century American craftsmanship. Rendered in tactile, bloomed gold, it features a woman in profile, her features delicately hand-enameled in soft pearlescent tones. She wears a full suite of jewels — an enameled diadem, a single sparkling diamond earring, and a finely detailed double-strand beaded choker. She is a sister to Alphonse Mucha’s iconic Art Nouveau muses.

For those who love a book reference as much as we do, a similar design appears on page 72 of The Glitter & The Gold, taken from Alling & Co.'s cost book, circa 1910.

Symbolic of feminine strength and protection, this locket makes a deeply meaningful gift — whether from or for a mother, or any woman who has been your rock.

Chain shown suspending the locket is available as an add-on option. It is period-appropriate, in a substantial double loop in loop link. It was found with the locket and is a lovely match for color.

French filigree chain shown is not included.

Locket: 14k gold, diamond, enamel. Marked with Alling & Co.'s clover-shaped maker’s mark (rubbed but legible) and “14k.” The reverse bears a hand inscription of the initials “ER”.

Chain: 15k gold (unmarked), with clasp and end loop in 14k gold (marked at clasp). Chain was likely once part of a longer, antique chain; clasp and loop are more recent additions.

Dimensions and weight:

● Locket: 55 mm long (including bail) x 33.2 mm wide x 7.4 mm deep; 21.9 grams

● Chain: 41.3 cm/16.25 inches long x 2.1 mm wide x 2.1 mm deep; 8.9 grams

Period: Edwardian

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. Both original rims and glass covers are present. Locket closes well. On the chain, there is a small area of repair (approx. 3.5 mm) close to the end loop that is slightly darker in color than rest of chain; not noticeable when worn. Buyer can contact us to remove that small section, if desired. We personally would keep it as it is.
