Love Returns.

Swallows mate for life and always return to the nest. In Victorian and Edwardian jewelry, the swallow was a beloved motif — symbolizing loyalty, safe return, and the enduring bond between loved ones parted by distance. During World War I, swallow jewels were often exchanged between sweethearts as tokens of devotion and hope.

Here is a rather wonderful, lively example — a soaring swallow in mid-flight, wings outstretched with confident grace. The bird’s body is set with a glittering array of old mine cut diamonds (with a few charming rose cuts mingling in), and the eye is a warm hessonite garnet for a glowy spark. The beak is gold, and most unusually, the swallow is flying through a knife-edged hoop, accented by natural sapphires and diamonds.

Originally a brooch, this piece was converted to an effortlessly wearable pendant some time ago with the removal of the pin and the addition of a bail. The work was done well, sympathetic to the elegance and clean lines of this jewel. A graceful addition to a chain, this pendant sits beautifully on the body and wears beautifully alone or layered with other sentimental favorites.

Such a meaningful and special piece — perfect to mark love that endures, the safe return of a loved one, or the beginning of a new journey with the promise of coming home.
