(SOLD) Antique French Gold Sautoir with Enameled Clasp
Rare, full-length French sautoir, circa 1840s, of stamped gold sheet plaques, secured by a large, enameled clasp. Each plaque has a floral motif, in matte and polished textures. The clasp is wonderfully detailed, with flowers on one side and a dove on the other. The polychrome enameling is in navy, green, aqua, light blue, white ,and orange. Wear long or doubled, with the decorative clasp on display.
Marked with French eagle’s head.
18k gold, enamel.
Dimensions and weight:
● 126 cm (49.5 inches) long (including clasp)
● 7 mm wide
● 28 mm long on the clasp
● 18.5 mm wide on the clasp
● 18.8 grams
Period: Victorian
Note that this chain is a rare survivor, and there are signs of wear and tear, including some small gaps and other imperfections to the delicate plaques.
