There is so much to love about this exceptional circa 1900 locket. Look to admire the profusion of lush blooms dimensionally engraved front and back. Feel it in the hand, tactile and substantial. Wear it on a long chain or short, special enough to treasure, but simple enough for everyday. Appreciate that it is a wonderful example of American jewelry making — crafted by Carter, Howe & Co. of Newark, New Jersey, capital of the American fine jewelry industry at the time.
Open the locket to discover stories of the loves and lives of an American family. Inscribed “JMH Jr. to EGP June 1903”, it also contains a photo of a smiling young man and a finely painted portrait of a rosy-cheeked baby boy. Contemplate that this jewel was a gift from John Mifflin Hood Jr. (in the photo), to his betrothed, Ethel Gilpin Painter, both from prominent Maryland families. Have a thought for the sweet baby in the portrait, likely their son John III who was born in 1906, but died too soon in 1915. The locket opens and shuts securely, with the original rims and glasses. Images may be removed if desired and replaced with personal mementos.
