We have a special fondness for functional jewels, especially receptacles for the personal and sentimental. What can be more intimate than a favorite perfume?
We were in Paris hunting for treasure when we spied this statement-sized scent bottle nestled among other beauties — a standout. Once we held this in our hands, we were smitten.
We adore every aspect of this Art Nouveau jewel — the scale, the urn shape, the rich yellow gold, and the profusion of irises — symbolic of faith, hope, wisdom in the language of flowers.
The design is completely in the round, with the back as beautiful as the front.
Likely once part of a grand chatelaine, this bottle pendant would be spectacular now suspended on an elegant French sautoir.
This jewel retains its tiny stopper, under the hinged lid. The top loop is a spring ring.
18k gold.
Marked with French eagle’s head at top loop, French owl mark at body, maker’s mark at loop (appears to be “AL”).
