Intimate, Sentimental.
Two centuries ago, likenesses like this were not meant for public display, but for private keeping — small portraits created to be worn close to the body. This antique portrait miniature depicts a young woman at ease, with an unguarded gaze, her hair delicately arranged and her dress light and airy. The modest scale lends an air of intimacy rather than formality.
The miniature is set in a refined gold frame, surmounted by a nine-point coronet or crown. Here, the crown is symbolic — a visual expression of personal importance and esteem, rather than a literal reference to rank.
We acquired the piece as a brooch and, for versatility, have added a discreet and harmonious hidden bail, allowing it to be worn as either a brooch or a pendant.
A wonderful find for the lover of wearable portrait miniatures and sentimental jewelry.
Marked with Austrian cocker spaniel’s head hallmark for 18k gold, a mark in use from 1965 to 2001, applied later—likely when the piece was imported into Austria or prepared for resale.
18k gold.
Dimensions and weight:
● 30.5 mm long (including the crown)
● 16.9 mm wide
● 5 mm deep (not including the pin mechanism)
● 4.7 grams
Period: 19th century (Regency-era portrait miniature); slightly later mounting.
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. We believe the covered safety C clasp is a later 19th century replacement.
*U.S. delivery only on this item.
