(SOLD) Antique Early 19th Century Chased Gold Diamond Cluster Ring with Shell Motif

Sold

Not your usual diamond cluster.

We were in Spain, just about to purchase a pretty, delicate, antique diamond cluster ring, when the proprietor brought out yet another box of jewels to view. When that lid swung open, our eye immediately zeroed in on this ring. It is big, bold, muscular, yet feminine. In the hand, it is hefty. On the hand, it is compelling. The cluster resembles a flowerhead, flanked by shoulders that are deeply chased, displaying an exuberance of floral and shell motifs. Yes, we bought it, and immediately wore it on an extended test run throughout Spain.

This ring dates to 1820s/30s, and it has lived a long life, beloved and worn often. We think this originally was a gentleman's ring, but today, it's fabulous for everyone! Gorgeous on any finger, but especially chic on the pointer finger or pinky.

Supremely comfortable to wear, with a low profile. Center diamond is set open backed, the rest closed.

For a similar ring, see Rings: Jewelry of Power, Love and Loyalty by Diana Scarisbrick, at page 328.

Unmarked.

18k gold, silver, diamond (center old mine cut approx. .30 ct, 7 rose cut, 1 single cut)

Dimensions and weight:

● 14.8 mm at widest point (at the cluster) tapering to 4 mm wide (at the back of the shank)

● 5 mm deep (at deepest point --at the cluster)

● 12.6 grams

● US Size 8.25 (just under); not resizable

Period: Georgian

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age commensurate wear may be present. Like any of us who has seen more than a few decades, this ring has acquired signs of wear, inherent to its antique nature. We see signs of restoration and repair. One of the smaller diamonds is replacement. There are a couple of fine fissures visible on the shoulders, under closest of examinations. Our skilled jeweler has reinforced the integrity of shoulders and shank from the inside. Please ask for additional views as needed.
