Talismanic, Timeless.

Coral has long been associated with protection — against evil spirits and illness — and worn against the body for those qualities, as well as for its uniquely alluring beauty.

In the Georgian and Victorian eras, a strand of coral beads was practically de rigueur in a lady’s jewelry wardrobe — especially as the well-heeled embarked on their Grand Tours to Continental Europe, and in particular to Italy, the source of this beautiful Mediterranean coral. Think of all the 19th century portraits you’ve seen of young women wearing coral!

Here, we have a strand of graduated, natural coral beads ending in a later, gold ball hook and push-in clasp. The beads are hand carved, with a soft sheen, in a slightly off round shape — characteristic of older coral beads. We believe these to be from the late Victorian period. The color is particularly beautiful — a rich and saturated tomato-y red that will register slightly more red/orange or orange/red, depending on the lighting. The beads are nice and dense (indicator of high quality coral) and graduate gracefully, flattering the neckline.

We love wearing coral against sun-kissed skin in the summer, paired with gold. Perfection.

Clasp marked 14k.

Natural coral, 14k gold.

Dimensions and weight:

● 20 inches long (current length; can be restrung with knots for added length)

● Beads graduate from 13 mm to 4.4 mm diameter; clasp is 5.8 mm diameter.

● 33.7 grams

Period: Victorian, with later 20th century clasp

(We also have a pair of coordinating coral button earrings. Please contact us for additional information on those).

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present.

*This item is available for shipping only within the U.S.
